Extending your stay in Canada as a visitor: the visitor record

1. Who can apply for a visitor record

To stay longer in Canada as a visitor, you need to apply for a visitor record. According to IRCC, it is also for workers authorized to work without a permit and students authorized to study without a permit who want to extend their stay. It also lets a study permit or work permit holder change to visitor status. A visitor record is not a visa.

It does not matter whether you entered with a visitor visa, an eTA or another document: the visitor record is the right application to extend.

2. When to apply

IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before your status expires. The expiry date is on the stamp in your passport (not the date on your visa). If there is no stamp, it is 6 months after the day you entered Canada. For a study permit, work permit or an already extended visitor record, it is the date on that document.

3. While you wait: maintained status

If you apply to extend before the date you were supposed to leave, you can legally stay in Canada until a decision is made: this is maintained status. People applying for a temporary resident permit do not benefit from maintained status. Book your biometrics appointment as soon as possible to avoid delays.

If the application is approved, the record normally arrives by mail within 6 weeks of the decision letter.

4. Keep in mind

Processing times and fees change: check IRCC’s pages before filing. If you plan to leave Canada while the application is pending, first read our article on travelling with temporary status, because a visitor record does not guarantee your return.
