1. Status does not guarantee re-entry
According to IRCC, a visitor record shows that you have visitor status and how long you can stay, but it does not guarantee you can leave and then re-enter Canada. If you travel outside Canada or the United States, you must meet the entry requirements.
2. If you need a visa
Visa-required travellers need a valid visitor visa every time they enter Canada, unless they are returning directly from the United States or Saint Pierre and Miquelon. A student or worker already in Canada can apply for a new visitor visa from within Canada if all of these apply: they are in Canada, they hold a valid study or work permit, they want to leave and return, and their visa has expired or was valid for only one entry.
3. If you are visa-exempt
If you fly in, your eTA is valid for 5 years or until the linked passport expires: travel with that passport. If you arrive by bus, train or boat, a valid passport or travel document is enough. US citizens normally need a valid passport or travel document, and NEXUS or FAST members can use their card in some cases.
4. If your extension application is pending
The IRCC pages we reviewed do not clearly say whether you can return on the basis of a pending extension application alone. Have your situation validated before leaving Canada: a refused entry or the loss of maintained status can complicate the rest of the file.
