The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is one of the Express Entry categories. It is for people who have experience in an eligible skilled trade and who plan to live outside Québec.
Basic requirements
According to IRCC, including:
- at least 2 years of full-time work (3,120 hours in total) in an eligible skilled trade, within the last 5 years;
- either a valid full-time job offer of at least 1 year, or a certificate of qualification in the trade issued by a Canadian authority: one or the other is enough;
- the minimum score required on the approved language tests, in all 4 abilities;
- no education requirement;
- sufficient funds to settle, unless you can already legally work in Canada and have a valid job offer;
- the intention to live outside Québec.
These requirements are published by IRCC and may change.
FSTP, FSWP or CEC?
- FSTP: experience in an eligible skilled trade, with a job offer or certificate of qualification, and no education requirement;
- FSWP: skilled professional experience, assessed on a 67-point selection grid;
- CEC: skilled work experience gained in Canada.
Being eligible does not guarantee an invitation: IRCC ranks the profiles in the Express Entry pool by CRS score, then invites some candidates to apply.
