CAQ renewal covers situations where your studies continue beyond your CAQ's end date, or where certain changes to your path require a new application.
When do you need to renew your CAQ?
A new application may be needed in particular when:
- your studies continue beyond the end date of your CAQ;
- you change your level of study;
- you change educational institution in a situation where a new CAQ is required;
- your study situation requires a new temporary selection application.
The applicable rules may depend on your situation and on when your CAQ was issued.
What documents may be requested?
For an application to extend your study stay, the documents should in particular show that you continued your studies in accordance with the conditions of your previous CAQ and that you will continue your studies in Québec.
Depending on your situation, this may include:
- an official transcript;
- an official certificate or letter from your institution;
- information about your program and its length;
- proof that your health and hospitalization insurance is maintained;
- an explanatory letter and supporting documents when your path needs particular explanation.
The MIFI may ask for additional documents when those provided do not clearly show your situation.
Does your path include a change or an interruption?
A change of program, level or institution, an interruption of studies or an extension of your path may require a particular review.
In these situations, it is important to present your path clearly and, where necessary, to explain the reasons for the change or interruption with the appropriate documents.
When should you apply?
The Government of Québec strongly recommends submitting your application at least three months before your CAQ and your study permit expire.
Keep in mind also that after you receive your new CAQ issuance certificate, a step with the federal government may be needed for your study permit.
