Spousal sponsorship remains one of the most commonly used pathways to Canadian permanent residence, but processing times have changed significantly as of May 2026. Here's the current state of the program and strategies to optimize your application.
Processing Times โ Spousal Sponsorship May 2026
| Application Type | May 2026 Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse outside Canada (outside Canada processing) | 24 months | Most common |
| Spouse in Canada โ status change (inside Canada) | 18 months | Includes temporary permit |
| Spouse in Canada + PR+ accelerated | 12 months | Strict eligibility criteria |
| Spousal sponsorship โ Quebec (IRCC + MIFI) | 38 months | Two levels of approval |
Inside Canada vs. Outside Canada: Which Option?
If your spouse is already in Canada on a valid temporary permit, inside-Canada processing (18 months) is generally faster than outside-Canada processing (24 months). Additionally, in inside-Canada applications, your spouse receives a Maintained Status (implied status) allowing them to stay legally in Canada during processing.
โก PR+ Accelerated Sponsorship: Who Qualifies?
The PR+ program offers 12-month processing for couples who can demonstrate: marriage of more than 2 years with continuous cohabitation, common children legally recognized, and no prior IRCC refusal history. Contact us to evaluate your eligibility.
