Express Entry: FSW processing time rises back to 7 months in September 2026

FEATURED — IRCC DATA
📈
A round trip in two months. After reaching 6 months in August 2026 — unseen since the beginning of the year — the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) processing time rises back to 7 months in September. This kind of monthly variation is normal for Express Entry, but it is a reminder that when you submit your application can influence your actual wait.

Why this back-and-forth in Express Entry processing times?

The Express Entry system works through regular draws of Invitations to Apply (ITAs), followed by a standardized processing period. IRCC aims for a service standard of 6 to 8 months for 80% of FSW, CEC (Canadian Experience Class) and FST (Federal Skilled Trades) files, as well as for the labour-market-based categories.

The time displayed each month reflects the volume of files actually completed during that period — it therefore rises or falls depending on the pace of draws, the number of ITAs issued and the processing resources allocated by IRCC. A low of 6 months therefore does not guarantee it will hold the following month.

Who is affected by this processing time?

  • ✅ Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) candidates who have received an ITA
  • ✅ People planning to create or update their Express Entry profile before the next draws
  • ✅ CEC and FST candidates, who are subject to a comparable service standard (6–8 months)
Good to know: The time displayed by IRCC is an estimate, not an individual guarantee. A complete, consistent and well-documented file at the time of filing avoids requests for additional documents — often the main cause of delay beyond the displayed standard.

What this changes for your CRS strategy

A longer processing time does not change your CRS score, but it affects the timeline of your plan: the likely date you obtain permanent residence, planning a job, a rental or school enrolment for your family. In a context where the time fluctuates from month to month, it is useful to build your file in advance rather than waiting for the ITA to start gathering your documents.

What can you do to avoid avoidable delays?

  • Prepare your documents (language test results, credential assessment, proof of funds) before you even receive an ITA
  • Check the validity of your language tests and your educational credential assessment (ECA) on the planned filing date
  • Respond to any IRCC request for additional documents as quickly as possible
  • Follow your file through your IRCC online account rather than by phone
💡 Practical tip: Many avoidable delays come from an expired credential assessment (ECA) or a language test submitted too late relative to the application. A file review before filing often catches these problems before they cost extra months of waiting.

FAQ — Express Entry / FSW processing time September 2026

Why did the FSW processing time rise from 6 to 7 months?

The time displayed by IRCC varies each month depending on the volume of files completed during the reference period. A low of 6 months in August does not guarantee it will last — September marks a return to the usual standard of 6 to 8 months.

Does this processing time also apply to the CEC and FST?

Yes, IRCC applies a comparable service standard (6–8 months) for the FSW, the CEC (Canadian Experience Class) and the FST (Federal Skilled Trades), as well as for the labour-market-based categories.

Is the displayed processing time guaranteed for my file?

No. It is an estimate based on 80% of the files processed during the period. A complete, uncomplicated file is generally processed within the displayed times; an incomplete file or one with missing documents may take longer.

How long does Express Entry take in total, from profile to PR card?

Counting profile creation, the wait for an ITA, filing the application (up to 60 days), IRCC processing (6–8 months) and then the final checks, the whole process generally takes between 8 and 14 months.
