International Experience Canada (IEC)

The International Experience Canada (IEC) program is a government initiative designed to allow young citizens from partner countries to stay and work in Canada. The main advantage of this program is that it exempts participants from the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), significantly simplifying access to employment. Whether you want to fund a trip or launch your career, IEC offers a unique professional immersion usually lasting up to 12 or 24 months.

The 3 IEC Program Categories

Each category meets a specific life project:

  1. Working Holiday (WHV): The most popular category. It issues an Open Work Permit, allowing you to work for any employer, in any city, while traveling across the country.
  2. Young Professionals: For graduates who already have a job offer in Canada. This permit is employer-specific and must contribute to your professional development. It is an excellent stepping stone before applying for an LMIA-based work permit if you wish to stay longer.
  3. International Co-op (Internship): Designed for foreign students who must complete a mandatory internship in Canada as part of their academic curriculum.

Selection Process: The Pool System

Unlike other visas, IEC operates through random invitations (draws).

  1. Eligibility: You must be a citizen of a partner country and be aged between 18 and 35 (or 30 depending on the agreement).
  2. Application: You join a "pool" of candidates. If selected, you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
  3. Deadlines: Once you receive the invitation, you have 20 days to submit your complete work permit application.

A Stepping Stone to Permanent Residency

Participating in IEC is not just a temporary adventure. It is a strategic lever for your future. The Canadian work experience you gain significantly boosts your points for Express Entry and often makes you eligible for Permanent Residency via the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Note: If your project is in Quebec, remember that working with a CSQ follows different selection rules.
