The International Experience Canada (IEC) program is a government initiative designed to allow young citizens from partner countries to stay and work in Canada. The main advantage of this program is that it exempts participants from the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), significantly simplifying access to employment. Whether you want to fund a trip or launch your career, IEC offers a unique professional immersion usually lasting up to 12 or 24 months.
Each category meets a specific life project:
Unlike other visas, IEC operates through random invitations (draws).
Participating in IEC is not just a temporary adventure. It is a strategic lever for your future. The Canadian work experience you gain significantly boosts your points for Express Entry and often makes you eligible for Permanent Residency via the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
Note: If your project is in Quebec, remember that working with a CSQ follows different selection rules.
Can I change employers with an IEC permit?
With an Open Work Permit (Working Holiday category), you have total freedom. For the Young Professionals or International Co-op categories, your permit is tied to a specific employer.
What are the fees and processing times?
Fees include the IEC participation fee and the work permit fees. Processing times vary by your country of origin, ranging from a few weeks to several months.
