Temporary status: the three main routes

Most people come to Canada first as a visitor, a student or a worker. Each status has its own conditions, its own end date and its own rights. Understanding what yours allows (and forbids) protects your future applications.

Choosing the right status

The right status depends on your goal: a short stay, a study program, a job with an employer or an open work permit. Choosing the wrong route can waste months, so it is worth comparing options before applying.

Extending before it expires

Apply for an extension before your current status ends. In many situations you can stay in Canada under maintained status while IRCC reviews your application, but the conditions of your previous status continue to apply. Keep your documents (permit, passport, proof of enrollment or employment) up to date.

Restoration of status

If your status has expired, restoration may be possible, but there is a short deadline after the expiry date and you must meet specific conditions. The sooner you act, the more options you keep. We assess whether restoration is realistic and what documents to include.

Moving toward permanent residence

Many temporary residents later apply for permanent residence, for example through Express Entry, Québec programs (PSTQ, PEQ) or a provincial nominee program. Planning early matters: language results, diploma recognition and work experience take time to build. We map the route that fits your profile.

Common mistakes

Waiting until the last week to extend, working outside the permit’s conditions, leaving gaps between statuses and ignoring a refusal letter are the most frequent problems.
