1. October’s figure
This article is about proof of citizenship (the certificate), not a naturalization application. According to IRCC’s October 9, 2026 processing-time update, as reported by CIC News, the wait rose to 34 months, up from 33 in September. The number of people waiting fell to about 130,700 from 136,000 in September: the first monthly decline since the Citizenship Act was expanded in December 2025.
| Month (2026) | Quoted wait |
|---|---|
| May | 12 months |
| June | 15 months |
| July | 19 months |
| August | 25 months |
| September | 33 months |
| October | 34 months |
One drop in the queue does not make a trend. Always check IRCC’s official processing times tool.
2. Why waits have soared
On December 15, 2025, through Bill C-3, Canada removed the first-generation limit for people born before that date. A person who can trace an unbroken line to a Canadian ancestor may therefore be a citizen, no matter how many generations apart, and can apply for proof of that status. Applications have poured in since. According to CIC News, a review of already-issued certificates also paused the finalization of some files for about a month, before processing resumed on June 30.
3. Urgent processing
IRCC may process some applications ahead of the queue. You need a letter explaining why you need the certificate sooner and documents showing the relevant date (for example a plane ticket or itinerary with proof of payment, a letter from an employer or school, a doctor’s note or a death certificate). A long wait alone does not qualify, and nothing guarantees a favourable decision or that the file will be processed in time. A request outside the criteria costs you nothing: your file simply continues at the normal pace.
4. File a complete application from the start
Waiting rarely helps: IRCC counts the files ahead of yours on the day yours arrives. An incomplete application is not processed, and missing records or names that do not match from one generation to the next send applications back for more documents, adding to the wait. Gather the records, document your searches for missing pieces and explain any gap in the line of descent.
