Family sponsorship

Sponsoring a spouse: the mistakes that delay or sink an application

Sponsorship processing times are already long. A mistake in the file can lengthen them further, or lead to the application being returned as incomplete or refused. Here are the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.

1. An incomplete application

An unsigned form, a missing page, a document absent from the checklist: IRCC may return the application without reviewing it. Use the official checklist and review the file page by page before sending.

2. Information that does not match

Dates, addresses, spelling of names and the relationship history must be identical across all forms and supporting documents. Inconsistencies between the sponsor and the sponsored person often trigger additional questions.

3. Weak proof of relationship

It is not enough to say the relationship is genuine; it has to be shown: photos spread over time, communications, proof of living together or travelling together, joint accounts or assets, statements from relatives. Choose representative documents rather than hundreds of screenshots.

4. Forgetting to declare people or history

Previous relationships, children and family members must be declared. An omission, even an unintentional one, can be seen as misrepresentation, with serious consequences.

5. Overlooking the sponsor’s eligibility

Some situations prevent you from sponsoring, for example a previous sponsorship undertaking that was not respected or certain financial situations. Check eligibility before you file, not after.

6. Missing certificates and exams

Police certificates, the medical exam and civil documents must be valid and cover the required period. Plan ahead, as they can take time to obtain depending on the country.

7. Ignoring Québec-specific requirements

If the sponsor lives in Québec, a provincial step is added to the federal application. Do not neglect it, and follow the current MIFI requirements.
