Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit for international students who have completed a program of study in Canada. This permit offers great flexibility, allowing the holder to work for any employer, regardless of location, while offering the possibility of full-time or part-time employment.

They are awarded for a period ranging from eight months to three years, depending on the length of the program of study. They are an excellent way for graduates to gain Canadian work experience, which can increase their chances of obtaining permanent residency.

The PGWP is an open work permit, meaning it is not tied to a specific employer. It allows international graduates to gain work experience in Canada, working in any sector for any employer.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit is intended for foreign students who have graduated from a designated educational institution in Canada. However, certain eligibility criteria must be met, such as the need for the program of study to have lasted at least eight months, and for the student to have been enrolled full-time for the duration of the program.

Once the application has been submitted, processing of a post-graduation work permit generally takes between 60 and 90 days. It is essential to apply immediately after graduation to avoid any period without legal status in Canada.

The post-graduation work permit is granted only once per student. However, once this permit has expired, the holder may, under certain conditions, be eligible for other types of work permit depending on his/her professional situation or if he/she has received a specific job offer

It is possible to work after graduation, but only with a valid work permit or under certain conditions of residency status. If you have already completed your studies and are awaiting a decision on your TCPP, it is essential to maintain legal status during this period to avoid any prohibition on working.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit is a one-time program. A person can apply for only one PGWP, regardless of the number of degrees obtained, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.

Acquiring Canadian work experience with an PGWP can greatly improve your chances of obtaining permanent residency. This experience can be used to increase your score under the Express Entry program or the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). The experience you gain can also be an asset for provincial programs, which can make you a preferred candidate for immigration to Canada.
