Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)

What is a Bridging Open Work Permit?

The BOWP allows foreign nationals already holding a valid work permit to continue working in Canada without interruption. For more technical details, you can consult the official IRCC program delivery instructions.

Who is eligible for a BOWP?

To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Currently reside in Canada with a valid temporary resident status.
  2. Hold a valid work permit (or be under maintained status).
  3. Have submitted a permanent residence application (FSWP, CEC, PNP, or QSWP for Quebec).
  4. Have received an Acknowledgement of Receipt (AoR) confirming your application is complete.

Official Fees

Government fees are $255 CAD. You can check the official IRCC fee list for any recent updates.

Validity Period

A BOWP is generally issued for a period of 24 months. If the permanent residence processing is delayed, extensions may be considered. The validity cannot exceed your passport's expiration date.

Family and Dependents

The spouse of a BOWP holder may also apply for a spousal open work permit. Dependent children can accompany the holder by applying for a visitor record or a study permit.

Can I leave Canada with a BOWP?

The BOWP is a work authorization, not a travel document. To return to Canada, ensure you have a valid eTA or Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).
