The 3 Express Entry Streams
The Express Entry system is the federal government's main portal for managing permanent residence applications from skilled workers. Your profile is ranked according to the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and the highest-ranked candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Federal Skilled Workers
Program for foreign workers with skilled work experience outside Canada.
- 1 year of experience in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation
- Minimum 67 points on the FSW selection grid
- Proficiency in English or French (CLB 7 minimum)
- Sufficient settlement funds
- No job offer required (but adds value)
Canadian Experience Class
Program for those who have gained skilled work experience in Canada (temporary or otherwise).
- 1 year of skilled experience in Canada (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3)
- Language skills CLB 7 (TEER 0, 1) or CLB 5 (TEER 2, 3)
- No minimum settlement funds required
- Ideal for work permit holders or graduated international students
- High approval rate — Canadianized profile
Federal Skilled Trades
Program for skilled trades workers with experience in a designated trade.
- 2 years of experience in a designated trade (NOC TEER 2 or 3)
- Valid job offer OR provincial certificate of qualification
- Language skills CLB 5 (speaking/listening) and CLB 4 (reading/writing)
- Covers: electricians, plumbers, cooks, carpenters, and more
- Settlement funds required (unless a Canadian job offer is held)

Francophone Advantage
Francophone Draws & PNP — Boost Your CRS
IRCC regularly holds draws dedicated to francophone candidates and provincial nominations (PNP). These pathways allow you to receive an invitation even with a CRS score below general draw thresholds.
Francophone Candidates — Reduced CRS Threshold
IRCC specifically targets francophones to strengthen the francophone population outside Quebec.
- Reduced CRS threshold: ~375–420 pts (vs. 481–510 pts in general draws)
- Criteria: French as primary official language (CLB 7+ speaking)
- Regular draws held throughout the year
- Compatible with FSW, CEC, and FST
- Decisive advantage for francophones outside Quebec
Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
A provincial nomination via a PNP automatically adds 600 CRS points — virtually guaranteeing an invitation.
- Alberta, Ontario, British Columbia, New Brunswick, and more
- Tech, healthcare, trades, natural resources streams
- Job offer in the province often required
- +600 CRS pts = near-guaranteed invitation at the next draw
- PNP → ITA timeline: generally 1–3 months after nomination
Quebec Selection via PSTQ or PEQ
Quebec has its own selection system. A Quebec CSQ combined with an active EE profile optimizes the overall strategy.
- CSQ via PSTQ (Arrima) or PEQ (graduates / workers)
- Quebec PNP nomination adds +600 pts to Express Entry CRS
- Combined strategy: CSQ + active EE profile
- Ideal for candidates with strong ties to Quebec
- CSQ timeline: 1 month (PEQ) to 12–18 months (PSTQ)

CRS Strategy
How to Optimize Your CRS Score
Your CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score determines your rank in the Express Entry pool. Understanding how each factor is weighted allows you to identify the optimization levers available to you.
Language skills (first official language)
Foreign work experience (3+ years)
Education level (doctorate = max)
Provincial nomination PNP (+600 guaranteed points)
Valid job offer (NOC TEER 0 = 200 pts)
Second official language (IELTS + TEF)
Language — IELTS & TEF
Language ability is the most rewarding factor to optimize. Each additional CLB band can be worth up to 20 CRS points. An IELTS score of 8.0 in all 4 skills equals CLB 10 — the maximum level recognized.
- IELTS Academic or General for English
- TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French
- Validity period: 2 years for the EE profile
Degree & ECA Assessment
A foreign degree must be assessed by a designated organization (WES, IQAS, etc.) to be recognized in the CRS calculation. A graduate-level equivalency is worth up to 150 points.
- Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) mandatory
- Assessment timeline: 4–8 weeks (WES)
- Canadian degree: additional bonus points
Spouse Factor
If you include a spouse or partner in your application, your score is calculated differently — and your spouse's skills (language, education, experience) can increase your combined score.
- Spouse language skills: up to 20 additional pts
- Spouse education: up to 10 additional pts
- Spouse Canadian experience: up to 10 additional pts
